That's not a scare statistic pulled from nowhere — it's IG's own disclosed number, the same one they're legally required to show on every ad and every page promoting spread betting. But here's what matters more: it's not because trading is impossible. It's because most traders approach it completely backwards.
The Three Fatal Mistakes
1. No financial plan — they trade without knowing what they need to make, or what they can actually afford to lose.
2. No risk management system — they risk different amounts on different trades, based on how confident they feel.
3. Learning by losing — they risk real money before they understand the mathematics behind their own strategy.
Would you start a business without knowing your revenue targets, your costs, or your break-even point? Of course not. Yet that's the equivalent of what most traders do every day — open an account, deposit some money, and start trading, hoping to get rich.
The Real Problem: Trading Blind
Here's what actually causes accounts to lose money. You learn a strategy — a YouTube video on candlestick patterns, a course on moving average crossovers, maybe a paid mentorship on "the best indicators." You practise it. You get excited when you spot your setup. You start trading, risking whatever "feels right."
And you have no idea if this strategy can actually achieve your financial goals — because you never calculated whether it has a mathematical edge in the first place.
The Questions You Can't Answer (But Must)
- How much do you actually need to make monthly to hit your goal?
- Can your strategy realistically produce those returns given your account size?
- What drawdown will you face — and can you handle it financially and emotionally?
- What happens if you hit a 10-trade losing streak?
Without answers to these, you're not trading — you're hoping.
The Professional Approach: Reverse-Engineer Everything
Professional traders start at the end and work backwards.
Step 1: Define Your Financial Goal — Specifically
Not "make money trading." That's vague hope, not a plan. Be specific: "I need £3,000/month," or "I want £100,000 in my account within 3 years."
Step 2: Calculate What's Actually Required
To make £3,000/month from a £10,000 account, you'd need 30% monthly returns. Is that realistic? Sustainable? Or is it a route straight to overtrading and excessive risk? This is where most trading education fails — it teaches strategies without ever connecting them to a financial plan.
Step 3: Stress-Test the Plan Before You Trade It
What happens to your plan if you hit a 20% drawdown? Ten losing trades in a row? Most traders discover these answers by losing money. The better approach is calculating them before you risk a penny.
Step 4: Practise With Real Money, at Micro Stakes
Demo trading has a real limitation: because nothing is actually at stake, it doesn't build the emotional discipline you need when real money is on the line. A loss on demo doesn't feel like a loss. A loss of even a few pounds, genuinely at risk, does.
Trading small, real stakes — a fraction of a pound per point — lets you feel that discomfort and practise managing it, while keeping your maximum downside during this learning period small and clearly bounded.
Practise With Real, Small Stakes
With IG, you can trade the DAX from as little as £0.05 per point. A 20-point stop loss means risking around £1 per trade — small enough to bound your risk while you build real trading discipline.
Risk Warning: Spread bets and CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 69% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with IG. You should consider whether you understand how spread bets and CFDs work, and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
Where This Gets Even Harder: Prop Firm Challenges
If IG's own 69% figure sounds sobering, prop firm challenges are worse still. An estimated 95% of prop firm challenge attempts fail — and for a very specific reason: challenges apply hard drawdown limits on top of everything above, so the same lack of a mathematical framework that costs a personal account money can end a challenge outright, often within days.
The Trader's Edge Formula: Built to Fix This
This is exactly why I built the Trader's Edge Formula — five connected calculators that reverse-engineer your entire trading plan from your actual financial goal, rather than leaving you to guess.
- Zero to a Million Blueprint — starts with your goal, calculates the exact monthly return you need
- TEF Simulator — reverse-engineers your required win rate, risk per trade, and R:R
- Position Sizer — calculates the exact stake for every trade, checked live against your target
- Drawdown Defender — runs infinite Monte Carlo simulations to stress-test your parameters before you risk a penny
- Strategy Analyser — projects your full compounding trajectory and shows the pound value of improving your edge
Until you've run your numbers through a framework like this, you're trading blind — regardless of how good your entries look on a chart.
Your 90-Day Plan
Weeks 1–2: Run the Numbers First
Before learning any new strategy, work out what win rate and risk parameters you'd actually need to hit your goal — and whether that goal is realistic in the first place.
Weeks 3–6: Learn the Fundamentals
Now that you know what you're aiming for, learn how to get there. IG Academy offers free, structured courses covering everything from the basics to advanced risk management.
→ Access Free Trading Education at IG Academy
Weeks 7–12: Practise With Micro Stakes
Open a live account and trade at small, bounded stakes — this is where real discipline gets built, in a way demo trading can't replicate. Track every trade. Watch whether your actual results stay consistent with what your calculations predicted — or drift away from them. That gap tells you whether you have a real edge yet.

Month 4+: Scale Systematically
Once you're consistently on-plan at micro stakes, increase your position size gradually, following the numbers from your Blueprint — not your emotions.
The Bottom Line
69% lose money not because trading is unlearnable, but because most people learn strategies before they ever learn whether those strategies have a mathematical edge. The 31% who are profitable tend to share one thing: they know their numbers before they risk their capital.
